German Shepherds in Northern California Shelters

Note: this page lists only a few of the many GSDs and GSD mixes available in Northern California animal shelters, and is not updated regularly. For a more current, comprehensive listing, please see the "Shelter Dogs" page of German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California's Website.

Most of the information on this page is obtained from the Website "Petharbor.com." This is an excellent database Website of dogs in animal shelters throughout the U.S. If you are searching for a particular breed of dog, you can sign up for a free 30-day "subscription" to Petharbor, whereby you will receive daily listings of your specified breed (if present) at the shelters you have specified. Petharbor.com is also an excellent way to monitor specific shelters for a dog you have lost. If you see a dog on this page that you're interested in adopting, please call the respective shelter immediately about it. Time is of the essence at shelters, including some SPCA facilities. If a shelter is overcrowded or a dog displays any signs of sickness or aggression, that dog could be euthanized very quickly. By law, California animal shelters are only required to keep a dog or other domestic animal four to six days (depending on hours and days of operation) after the day it is received at the shelter before they have the option of euthanizing it.

GSRSV has not seen or evaluated the dogs on this page (with occasional exceptions). We list the dogs to assist in their timely adoption or rescue. Please be advised thatthere is a high degree of turnover at shelters and we can not guarantee the availability of any of the dogs. We recommend calling the respective shelter to see if the dog you are interested in is still available before going to the shelter.

Female	"Willow" is a fun-loving 2-yr GSD mix. Poor Willow has been at the shelter near Jackson since September, so she really needs a home. Willow loves the people she sees daily--greets them with many licks and signs of affection--and would quickly bond with any new owner. She’s fine with other dogs, but no livestock, cats, or other small animals, please. It’s very rare for any shelter to keep a dog as long as Willow , so she must be an exceptional dog! Female	"Osa" is a beautiful, loving 10-mos old purebred GSD. She was surrendered with her young mother and has just been separated from her for the first time, so she's a little confused and unsure about her surroundings. Osa needs a gentle introduction to you and once she spends a few minutes with you she quickly becomes your new best friend. Male	"Klause" is a handsome 2-yr old NEUTERED male longcoat GSD at the Sac City shelter. Klause's former (and original) owner, David, brought him to the shelter on 6-9-10 after he lost his house to foreclosure. David contacted me to see if I could help find a home for Klause, who had yet to be adopted as of 6-21. David says that Klause is very friendly and had never so much as growled at anyone. He's quite exuberant, and still had a habit of jumping on people in his excitement when he met them (a habit that's not hard to break). It's rare to know so much background on a dog in a municipal shelter. Klause is really a "low risk" adoption, and is even AKC-registered! Click for pic. ID #A345130. Female	"Electra" is a beatiful 1-yr old female purebred GSD who shelter volunteers describe as "a very smart, affectionate girl who would love to be adopted by an active family that is familiar with the German Shepherd breed. She walks well on leash once she gets out of her kennel and enjoys squeaky toys. Electra does have some issues with her hips and walks with a slight limp. However, that does not dampen her spirit." Female	"Lady" is a 2-yr old female purebred GSD. A little timid but very friendly. She approaches on her own and is very curious. She is an affectionate dog, comfortable being close and being petted.
